Are You Inspired By Your Work? If Not You Are Wasting Your Time.

I truly believe that everything about how and why we work has changed. There is no reason to do anything you aren’t inspired to do, if you’re not inspired you are wasting your time and no amount of managerial motivation will change that.

I’ve raved about Daniel Pink‘s new book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. I’ve even given away several copies of the books here because I believe so much that everyone should read it.

Seriously, please read this book. Then go read John Hagel‘s new book The Power of Pull: How Small Moves, Smartly Made, Can Set Big Things in Motion.

You have just about enough time to read them both before Clay Shirky’s new book: Cognitive Surplus: Creativity and Generosity in a Connected Age.

This month in Wired there’s even a great interview with Pink and Clay Shirky called: Cognitive Surplus, about both of their books.

Despite my best efforts most of you probably still haven’t read Drive so here’s the cliff notes in animated video. You can at least watch this right? :)

Video credit: This lively RSA Animate, adapted from Dan Pink’s talk at the RSA, illustrates the hidden truths behind what really motivates us at home and in the workplace. www.theRSA.org

I'm looking forward to reading Drive. I'm a big believer in doing work that you love which I think is a far better compensation than money. I think a lot of people are unhappy because of the misconception that money is a more practical goal than job satisfaction which is discussed in Dan Miller's 48 Days to the Work You Love.

Why people do great things and free over the weekends? Because if money doesn’t matter and they’re getting paid on their regular awesome jobs then it’s ok!

Why people are not as productive on their regular jobs? Because they’re being paid for a task that maximizes the company’s profit, their business model is not FREE!

What’s wrong with this? You’re giving away things for FREE, somebody else could get paid to do. You’re getting decent money at your job, and then you’re spoiling the possibility of other people doing money with the things this people are giving away for FREE because they’re bored at their jobs!
