Knowing when to shut up

I’ve always been very talkative. Maybe it’s because I’m a social learner. Talking through things helps me learn. Maybe it’s because I like the sound of my own voice, who knows.
I’ve talked written about the importance of learning to listen. This is a very important lesson to learn as an organization. As an […]

Google Reader Notes helps FriendFeed hurts del.icio.us and Twitter

Garrett Rogers over at zdnet felt the new Google Reader, notes functionality was a possible threat to Twitter. I don’t totally agree with that. It hurts Twitter only because it helps FriendFeed so much. This feature will mostly challenge bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and Diigo.
While it doesn’t completely replace how I use […]

Conversation Matter: Bridging the Social Media Gap

Last month Michael Brito contacted me about a project he was getting ready to launch. I’d met Michael at a conference last year, he had left HP right before I started working there. He went to Yahoo and now is at Intel. Michael’s idea was to […]

Search Engine Optimize Your Emails

Some of you may be thinking that I’m taking SEO waaaaaay to far. And maybe I am but most of you using Gmail will understand what I’m talking about.
This also applies to Outlook users who actually use the search function or people with Google Desktop installed.
I have had a love/hate relationship with […]

Walking the Razors Edge

Social media workers walk a dangerous line everyday. Everyday they walk into a battlefield not knowing what fate awaits them. One wrong word, one misinterpreted email, a delayed response to a blog comment; any of these things can start a fire storm that could ruin the reputation of the company or the social […]

If you are using Google Reader the “share” feature is a […]

“I don’t read blogs.” Bet you do.

I see a lot of research out there saying that not very many people read blogs. At HP we also conduct a lot of focus group research where we ask people if they read many blogs. Overwhelmingly most people say they don’t read blogs.
So are blogs still relevant? (I bet you can […]

H&R does it with Twitter but do their accountants do it?

Social Media Case Study: Blatantly Advertising … And Getting Away With It | Social Media Explorer
As it turns out, H&R Block not only gets the outreach portion of it, but has figured out a way to be 100-percent, totally marketing/advertising to people using social media tools and somehow pull it off. No, I wasn’t sure […]

A Failure to Communicate

I have a confession. I have a really irrational fear and it has to do with a piece of technology. I hate fax.
I hate faxing. There, I said it. I feel much better. I can never tell when it goes through. Did I place the paper the right way? Did my fax get picked […]

Twitter: my social network of choice

Hugh Macleod has a great post about his affinity for Twitter (and a nice little "birdie" icon).
Besides noting that he doesn’t really use Facebook anymore (a trend I find myself in as well), he has this great quote:
Yesterday, I joked on Twitter, "Note to World: If you’re not on Twitter, I don’t want to […]
