Dave you and Chris use Twitter the same, more like group IM. I've always used it for knowledge sharing. It's been especially interesting to not how mixed my old Boise crowd is on this since I moved.

I can see where you're coming from Tac but I need to agree with Chris. I haven't had a whole lot of time for Twitter myself lately, but I'm not throwing links up just so people don't forget I'm there. I'm sure your links are of great value and that many people appreciate them but I honestly have to say that I see your links on twitter and skip past them faster than the commercials on my DVR.

I believe it depends how one uses the conversation or sharing in social network. I noticed a dialogue going on about forums vs. Social networks. Differences can be part technology, and most how individuals engage with these communication vehicles. Same with conversations and social networks. I, too, will do more knowledge sharing on Twitter than responding to tweets and expanding the conversation. Partly from lack of replies, but mostly due to lack of time. Twitter caters to a bunch of needs: a great place to find the seed of ideas and thoughts (in real time) which could be explored further; Very scannable; lots of variety. But am often disappointed by lack of depth and follow through (and of course, all the self promotion). Small talk can serve its purpose. But in all communications, it's a two way street -- the value comes from what you are seeking in the different types of exchanges, and the person (s) you choose to engage with.
