Slashdot | FreeBSD 7.1 Released
For those of you not following the open source operating system world this may not seem like a big deal. Heck even if you are it still might not seem like a big deal but BSD IMO has a real shot at gaining ground in a few key areas Linux hasn’t been able to because of certain OS licensing issues. I have yet to try FreeBSD but I think I may finally dip my toe in that pond. Can I use this as an excuse to buy a new machine

Web 2.0 will never reach it’s potential.
Why?
Because “Universal Democracy” in publishing is chaos. The ideal of ‘free’ disregards all cost especially that of delivery (publishing). Even if the content is free as in here where the time to create these notes are donated the inherent cost to publish and deliver (hosting) must be paid by someone. That someone wants, no needs, to turn a profit whether it is directly from the site or from some employer or sponsor.
Web 2.0 will fail because censorship is an essential component of controlling quality, even if it fails to control content or opinion.
Here is a great example of extortion by Web 2.0. For the believers of Web 2.0 it’s a definite “black eye.” For non believers it is the harbinger of the end of ‘free and democracy’ on the web. You can have one but not the other.
