To me the problem stems from people thinking that newspapers are synonymous with news, or journalism, or reporting. In my experience those three things are happening less and less at newspapers. Making it illegal to link to a newspaper would kill their business faster than anything else (IMO).

T.J. and Haley Anderson are working for NASA Houston-based contractor Oceaneering Space Systems Inc. Oceaneering won the NASA contract to design and produce spacesuits for the Constellation program, which includes proposed missions to the moon and Mars.

But since journalist Malcolm Gladwell has somewhat parochially decided to make the Future of Paid Journalism the focus of his review of Free (which is, ironically, free on the New Yorker’s website; perhaps this is something Gladwell should take up with David Remnick?), I’ll try to respond in a bit more detail.
