My Top 5 Twitter Tips

#5

Don’t DM (direct message) someone something you wouldn’t tweet. That’s what IM, email or the phone is for. You will screw up at some point and while you can delete tweets on Twitter you can’t delete what get’s sucked up into someone’s Twitter app. DM should be for things that wouldn’t be of general information or Twitter Battles that go on too long.

RT other’s tweets that you find valuable. This is the equivalent of linking to someone in your blog. It builds good karma with the person you re-tweeted and ads value to your followers. It’s a win-win-win.

If you have time when adding a new follower send them a personalized DM with something that shows you read their profile or checked out their blog. Auto DM’s suck, don’t do it, it says you really don’t care who’s following you.

Links are by far the most valuable currency on Twitter. Witty dialogue and observations are great but I’ve found that helping your followers find cool stuff is even more appreciated.

#1

Make you best tweets (like the one’s with links) as short as possible so it’s easier for people to RT (re-tweet). Because once they RT it adds 2 characters for the RT plus however many characters for your @username. RT’s are a great way to get new followers.
