Web 2.0 and New Media Definitions

There is a lot of confusion around the definitions of Web 2.0 vs New Media. You will hear a lot of people use them interchangeably. Even the above linked to Wikipedia definitions don’t offer much differentiation. So while theses may not be definitive this is the difference as I see them.

Web 2.0 is the technology.

This includes things like: AJAX, Blogs, Wiki’s, podcasts, RSS, widgets and tagging.

New Media is the philosophy.

This is the new approach to how we communicate with each other. This is what makes things like social communities so powerful.

It’s the combination of these two factors at the same time that have created the change that we are experiencing. One without the other is not as powerful.

Web 2.0 is cool, I like the technology but without the philosophy it’s just a cooler way to experience the web.

New Media is great, the approach of many to many and knowledge sharing across multiple groups is extremely powerful but without the technology you are limited to off line geographically limited groups.

Combine the two you you achieve exponential results.

On Phenomenology and Web 2.0

What is the big deal about New Media?  Why do people think that anyone cares enough about what they have to say that they start blogging?  If you don’t know, you are obviously not blogging.

On my new business cards (when they get done) my title will say Phenomenologist (it was that or Prototypical Nonconformist).  Phenomenology is a type of research that requires the researcher to experience that which they are studying as a complete participant, not as an outside observer.

If you really want to understand what all the hype is, get involved.  At least try it out.  Start reading blogs, listen to podcasts (you won’t ever miss the radio).  Start your own blog, you can even start it privately.

There is a whole new level of collaboration and innovation that is happening on the web and if you’re not involved you are missing it.  Even if you’re reading blogs and watching what’s happening, you won’t be getting the full advantage the the social web has to offer.

Yes, New Media/Web 2.0 is overhyped.  No MySpace/Face Book is not all it’s cracked up to be.  Twitter is cool, but not THAT cool (ok, maybe it is).  But collectively the power of all of these mediums combined is revolutionizing the way that people communicate and collaborate.

The businesses that “Get It” will have a significant advantage.  This is definitely a case of first mover advantage, if you play the “wait and see” game too long, it will be too late.

How can you figure out if this is the right thing for you and your company or what is the best way to implement it?  Become a Phenomenologist.

New Media’s not just for Marketing

Social Media and Quantum Chaos?

If you’ve read any of my various blogs as I’ve hopped around from platform to platform you may have started to notice a trend to my rantings recently. For almost two years I have been chasing windmills and crying for companies to reach out to their customers using New Media technologies like blogs, podcasts and all things RSS.

Then sometime in mid 2006 I started to feel the need to chase a new type of windmill; Companies need to embrace the power of the social web to communicate with not just their customers but their employees, and their financial stakeholders and their strategic partners. From what I’ve seen, New Media has a much greater ROI internally (or at least easier to measure) than it does externally (more on that later).

Now that I’ve escaped the People’s Temple I will be focusing on helping companies use New Media to maximize their relationships with all the groups they rely on to do business. I will also be working on many other related projects and announcing them here first, so grab the feed and stay tuned. If you still want your Marketing fix, there will still be plenty of that here too.
