The Calm Because of the (Social Media) Storm

There is a small subset of people I watch as my pulse on the industry. These are the people that are actually doing social media for companies. Not talking about it, or reporting on it or hoping to get a job doing it but the ones I know are day in day out getting their hands dirty.

And they are really quiet. Not many blog posts and not many tweets. And I know why. They are working in the storm. It may seem quite on the outside but it’s a tempest on the inside.

The space is really heating up and it’s only going to get worse.

More people are getting jobs just doing social and companies are really ramping up their efforts. I’m optimistic about all the things we’re going to see when they do come up for air. I’m also nervous about the other things that demand will create: really crappy work.

If you’re heads down working your butt off or if you are new to this space and being thrown into the deep end my advice is look before you leap, stick to the basics and don’t be stupid.

Interesting that things can go quiet just when activity is the most intense. Hey, who has time to write notes or journal when in the heat of battle?

I think it's great that at least one sector of tech is counter-macro-economy: web 2.0 > 'social and digital media'. Or maybe just completely decoupled.

Steve it's amazing to me how much social media has continued to grow
during the recession. And then to realize that when we pull out of
this recession that these trends will only be accelerated, makes me
think of a line from Jaws, “We're going to need a bigger boat.”

Incisive as usual. For you, SM currency is mission-critical. For me at the moment, it's a virtual way to add conversation and community during the long weeks of sitting alone in the country, editing college admissions videos. And it's also a way for me to add useful service tools for my clients. Right now I'm working with two diff developers to create pilot iPhone aps for two college admissions frontiers: GPS tours and sharing video/info/relational links.

Guys like you have found a channel of information that's very helpful to guys like me. Keep it coming, when you're not at the eye of the storm.
