When Social Media Stops Being Shiny

We’ve made it. This is the place we all wanted to be. The social media war is over. Aren’t we all excited now?

Social media has made the big time. We’ve crossed the chasm, we’re mainstream, people are finally taking us seriously. We were right and they were wrong.

Maybe because it’s the end of summer. Maybe because I still haven’t fully recovered from Seattle Geek Week and Gnomedex. Either way I’m a little tired. Not physically tired but tired and a little bored. Part of it’s definitely the ADHD.

I still love this space. I love social media but it’s no longer revolutionary. It’s now evolutionary. Yes there are still parts of the world, industries and practices that still haven’t felt the full impact of the cultural revolution but it will happen. Just like sand castles on the beach they’ll all succumb to the tide. Eventually.

If you look around you’ll see the affects of Early Adopter Burn-Out. Some of them still believe but change their blog focus. Some of them all but quit blogging. Some of them radically change their career trajectory. You’ll see lots of job hopping and general a lot of restlessness.

I was talking with Jeremiah Owyang earlier this month and I asked him if he was seeing anything new or surprising in social media. I figured if anyone had, it would be him. He hadn’t.

Every trend, even really big ones like social media, hit  point where in order to be sustained the early adopters have to step out of the way and let people who don’t get easily distracted manage processes and create best practices. Things early adopters aren’t typically that good at.

So is this just a post about Tac whining (again) that things aren’t changing radically anymore? Am I quiting? No, far from it. Sure I’m venting a little but I wanted to get this off my chest so I could move on to the next phase.

You’ll notice that I’ve been posting less. The focus of my posts have shifted. But I’ll still be blogging regularly. You’ll probably see some new people posting here as well and in fact I still have an open invite for guest bloggers and contributors.

I’ll always post here about social media strategies and the future of business but you may see less posts about bright shiny objects and more posts about things like scaling a business, change management and larger socio-economic trends. That’s what I find interesting and how I spend most of my time on these days. Announcements about new “me too” features from Facebook or copycat startups aren’t that exciting. (Although I’m sure I’ll still find things I regularly geek out over and post those here as well.)

What about you? What do you find interesting these days? What are you bored with? What are you changing in your life if anything?

What would you like to see me post more or less about?

    Good post.

I think social media has stopped being shiny to those who have been the space for awhile, however I think it’s still fresh and new to a lot of those who weren’t early adopters.

For me personally, I’m still fascinated with blogging and more specifically the use of video blogging. I think video is still vastly under-rated and we’re going to see a lot more of it. I also believe geolocation has a lot of growth and maturing to do.

What do you think about “the Internet of things” concepts out there? Cyborgs? Transhumanism? etc.?

  • http://www.newcommbiz.com tacanderson

I do find the Internet of Things interesting but largely it’s an extension of social media and data analytics. Cyborgs and transumanism like we saw at Gnomedex this year and last are interesting but aren’t social media.

I agree, there’s new, then there’s “new to you.” I agree that video will only get bigger and it’s fun to watch the mediums evolve but it’s not quite the revolution it was 3-5 years ago.

I see what you’re saying. I guess I was just thinking about the intersection of social media with those other things. Example: how will people be social in a world where we are half machine, or “beyond human.” What form will social interactions take then?

Either way, it’s just fun to think about. :-)

I think what’s important to discuss now is the web of the future. Will it be an Apple-type future where all we use are apps and we surf the web on our TVs? Or will it continue to be a web that anyone can contribute to and build things for? Chris Messina from Google spoke about this at a recent conference I attended. Here’s his presentation: http://www.slideshare.net/factoryjoe/future-of-the-social-web-and-how-to-stop-it By the way, I was bored for a lot of this conference for many of the reasons you cited and I’m not even a regular conference-goer. I prefer specifics, concrete plans, etc.

Social Media in the emerging world and across others cultures is rather interesting. It is pretty saturated here in the US and we have seen the most interesting parts of the “revolution”. The future of education with regards to social media could be something that could affect our lives profoundly. It almost seems like that would take a while.

Thanks for the link. That’s such an important topic and I feel like people are willing to give away all their freedom for the sake of convenience.

Emerging countries will play a a huge roll in shaping the future of this space. I’m especially excited about the entrepreneurial efforts I see coming out of Africa.

Seems to me like we all need to travel a bit then. And then blog some more :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and making us think ;)

Social media is part of revolution. Even we should say this is the way now a days to express anythings.

You’re right on the money, social media has lost some of it’s “cool” factor that it had when the early adopters hopped in. That is not a bad thing however, it just means that some of us are going to be ready for the next big thing sooner than others.
