The manufactured self and core self are not mutually exclusive; one actually cannot live without the other, but one is visceral and innate and the other highly monitored and selective. It’s sort of like Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One is in control; the outwardly respected and accepted doctor while the other is all raw emotions (negative ones mind you but still). That’s the same with us and how we share online or how we don’t share.
Lexie Kier and I were chatting over coffee this past weekend when the topic of google and privacy came up. Foursquare’s Radar feature came into the mix and we wondered if people would ever be ok with full disclosure. We both instantly said no.
We are not comfortable with that idea yet; we still need to monitor our manufactured, outward selves and protect our core. So then what about all those social apps? Millions use them so we must be ok with it. Well, not exactly. There’s a spectrum. So lexie and I mapped it out. What apps cater to the manufactured self and which to the core?
This is where we ended up.
I think this would be really cool research to see how each uses different social apps. Some who have Twitter set to private are probably way to the left while others on Twitter are completely to the right. I like where this is headed though.
I wish government and proponents of bills like SOPA, PIPA & ACTA realized those of us opposed to them aren’t pro-pirating or pro-counterfeiting, we’re just opposed to any governing body having the ability to wield the power to shut any company, organization or individual down without due process and without transparency. Is that really so hard to understand?
This is a great video and a must watch. We can learn how to multitask and social media tools can increases our ability to learn - despite what everyone says.
I typically post between 15-20 posts a month. Some months more, some months less, but this last year has been more consistent for me than other years. I’ve settled into a bit of a groove. I may only post about half of the days of the month but I write … Continue reading →
What makes a successful blog? Is it amount of traffic? Is it number of subscribers? Do you weigh the success by engagement and number of comments? By any of those metrics I have a slightly better than average blog for a business blog. I’ve been averaging about 10,000 page views … Continue reading →
I’ve never considered myself a very good writer, at least not well rounded writer. I don’t do well with long form content and I don’t follow rules very well. I was pretty good at writing poetry (or at least my professor told me I was). I think this was because … Continue reading →
Blogging as a medium has been an interesting thing to watch. I remember when ‘blog’ was first made an official word. During those early years blogging was all the rage. It was the bright shiny object long before Twitter or Facebook were household names. I like starting things, I’m just … Continue reading →
The move to the UK has been pretty disruptive as I’m sure you can imagine but I’ve also found it oddly disruptive to my social media activities. It hasn’t been disruptive on my quantity of activity or even my quality of content (you may think otherwise so please tell me … Continue reading →
From time to time I have had guest bloggers here and while I am always open to guest bloggers and contributors, I thought I would take this chance to remind my readers that I would love it if you wrote a guest post. I get so tired of my own … Continue reading →
If you want to have a really popular blog, don’t follow my example. According to all the blogging “experts”, if you want a famously successful blog make all your posts about your readers and the benefit to them. Write nothing but top 10 lists and 12 steps to better whatever … Continue reading →
I love blogging. It has literally changed my life. It has changed the way I think, work, communicate and live. I’ve said it before but even if no one was reading this blog I would still write and publish here. Because of my love of blogging and experimenting with the tools that … Continue reading →
As I just noted in my last post, a lot of people have, seemingly, fallen out of love with their blogs. After publishing that last post I wanted to expand my thinking. As I’ve been going through the list of people I follow on Twitter looking to see who has blogs … Continue reading →
